pastor joel_websiteDr. Joel Tetreau, Senior Pastor

Dr. Joel Tetreau prefers to be known as “Pastor Joel" or simply “Joel.” Joel loves the congregation he serves at Southeast Valley Bible Church. Joel has 23 years of pastoral experience. He has served since January of 1999 at Southeast Valley Bible, and was the first lead pastor.

Outside of pastoral ministry at SVBC, Joel has served in a variety of other capacities. He has taught ministry, Bible, and theology classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has ministered nationally and internationally working with both Western and national ministry leaders often through leadership training. He presently serves as the Regional Coordinator with IBL West (Institute of Biblical Leadership – founded by Dr. Russ Lloyd). Over the years he has served in a variety of para-church ministries as a board member. Some of those ministries include IBL, Global Grace Missions (a ministry of Morning Star Church in Rockford, IL.), as well as advisory board positions of ministries like Grand View Camp (near Eager, AZ) as well as the chaplain endorsement ministry of the AGC (Associated Gospel Churches – Greenville, SC). Lastly Joel has shared in the organization and leadership for “The Standpoint Conferences.”

Early in his ministry he taught at the Great Lakes Sunday School Conference and served as a member of the IFBAM youth committee in Southeastern Michigan. While as a student Joel served in student body leadership positions both at International Baptist College as well as Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. In the past Joel has belonged to groups such as the AACC (American Association of Christian Counselors) as well as the ETS (Evangelical Theological Society). In the blog world, Joel is known for his defense of a specific approach to ministry that he calls “Type B fundamentalism.” In the summer of 2013 Joel’s book entitled, The Pyramid and the Box: The Decision-Making Process in a local New Testament Church was published by Resource Publications of Wipf & Stock Publishers (Eugene, Or). If you would like a personal signed copy of this book just contact Joel by way of email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Pastor Joel has been married to Toni Lee (Carmack) Tetreau since August 17, 1991. Joel and Toni have three sons: Jonathan, Jeremy, and Joshua. The Tetreau’s enjoy music. Toni teaches piano, leads the SVBC choir as well as organizes the family for occasional musical specials. Over the years the boys have enjoyed musical instruments, sports, their teachers and friends at church and an area Christian school that they attend. Joel loves being with his family, hiking, hunting, fishing, reading, and traveling for ministry or for fun. Joel grew up in a ministry home. His parents, Dr. Jerry and Kit Tetreau have been instrumental in leading International Baptist College for over thirty years.
